The SYNAPSE model is structured in four interactive layers, which aims to reflect the different phases of learning in relation to discoveries in cognitive science and education science. This model is distinguished by a clear articulation between:

Reception and activation: The learner receives new information, activates their prior knowledge and mobilizes their attention.

Adaptation and adjustment: the learner modifies their representations and adjusts their cognitive strategies according to the feedback they receive.

Observation and self-regulation: the learner takes a step back from their learning, evaluates their own progress and refines their strategies.

Consolidation and storage: the learner reinforces their learning through repetition, practice and integration in a variety of contexts.
The SYNAPSE model draws on recent work in cognitive psychology (Sweller et al., 2011), neuroscience (Dehaene, 2020) and active learning (Zimmerman, 2002) to offer a dynamic and adaptable vision of learning.
